When you are in the center of Salem, you will see towering above, the Salem Witch Museum. Its gothic architecture is enough to lure onlookers in. An old church converted to museum in 1972; one just has to check it out at least once while in Salem.
Tickets are available on the website, easy click and pick your time of arrival, so you can buy same day. Make sure to show up in line in time. You get a card and a sticker which gives you discounts off of “partner shops” throughout town. We went on a Wednesday so not all of the partner shops were open, but you can save like 10 percent on food, or coffee, etc which is a nice little bonus. The tour lasted maybe an hour, gave information on the Witch Trials using a wax figure presentation, which was very informative and really brought the past to life. I actually was in tears afterwards.
After that, we learned a timeline on magical witch history, seeing some rare examples of books they house there, then spent the end of our tour buying things from the gift shop.
Now, I had mixed feelings initially about going to a Witch Museum and hear me out on this. For one, I consider myself a witch and certainly don’t condone making money of the horrors that happened in Salem. However, on the flip side, the more people get educated on the horrors that occurred, the better our civilization may become. Maybe people will now think more open minded if they encounter a witchy herbalist or fairy magickal person. In a time where life is crazy the last thing we need is someone executing someone with “spectral evidence” or on the words of a bored child whose peculiar actions put fear in the powers that be.
So, in this sense, to spread enlightenment, I’m all for the tours. I hope that Christians and Wiccans all go to this exhibit to learn what happened. Naught it happens again!
Another big thing I’m happy about is the website itself shows you points to visit (self guided) in neighboring towns. It became a great help to us finding points to visit in Danvers, Salem, Marblehead, but it lists points all over the place!
